Each squad leader deployed to Afghanistan as leaders in Third Platoon; CPT Wainwright joined the team in mid-April, while SSG Horval moved from Brigade Air NCO to take the reins as platoon sergeant in July. PLATOON LEADER: CPT Ken Wainwright

Hometown: Burbank, California

Birthday: 27 May 1979

Age: 26

Biography: CPT Ken Wainwright was born and raised in Burbank, California. After graduating from Burbank High School in 1997, he began a civil engineering degree at the University of California, Berkeley. He was introduced to the Army as a cadet in the Army ROTC Golden Bear Battalion at UC Berkeley, where he was a member of the rifle and Ranger Challenge teams. The following year, CPT Wainwright was accepted to the United States Military Academy, West Point, in the class of 2002.

As a cadet, CPT Wainwright served in a variety of academy posts including Platoon Sergeant and First Sergeant for Company G-4 'The Fighting Guppies', and Executive Officer of 2nd Battalion, 4th Regiment 'Rear Guard'. He was active in a variety of company intramural sports and completed the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC in 2000. During his time as a Cadet, CPT Wainwright participated in Cadet Troop Leader Training with Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 327 Infantry Regiment at Fort Campbell, KY, and spent two months in a village outside of Mbale, Uganda, helping to build a community medical center. CPT Wainwright earned his bachelor degree in International and Strategic History with an emphasis on the Middle East and Arabic language. He graduated 2nd out of 998 members of the Class of 2002.

In late 2001, CPT Wainwright competed and was selected for one of forty George C. Marshall Scholarships, a civilian scholarship offered by the British Government for United States scholars to study at any university in the United Kingdom for up to 3 years. Following graduation from West Point, CPT Wainwright enrolled in the Oriental Studies program at Oxford University, England, and began a two year Masters of Philosophy in Modern Middle Eastern Studies. As a part of this program, CPT Wainwright intensively studied Arabic, including a month at the Bourguiba Institute for Foreign Languages in Tunis, Tunisia. LT Wainwright earned his Blue as a defenseman on the Oxford University Lacrosse Club and rowed 5th seat on the Lincoln College Boat Club. He submitted his thesis on Egyptian policy in the Gaza Strip and sat exams in June 2004, heading to Fort Benning for his professional Army training shortly thereafter. He arrived at the 2nd Battalion (ABN), 503rd Infantry Regiment in Vicenza, Italy on February 7th, 2005, and deployed to Afghanistan as the battalion's assistant Civil-Military Affairs officer. On April 19th, 2005, CPT Wainwright proudly assumed the officer leadership of 3rd Platoon, Chosen Company.

For over six years, CPT Wainwright has trained, studied, and prepared to be a platoon leader. It is a charge that he readily accepts without reservation, and with the understanding of the awesome responsibility that he has to the sons, husbands, and brothers that are the paratroopers of 3rd Platoon and Chosen Company. Along with the Non-Commissioned Officers of the platoon, he will lead his paratroopers with determination, audacity, and steadfast courage throughout the deployment in Afghanistan for as long as he has the honor to be their officer leader. CPT Wainwright will constantly strive to employ your sons, husbands, and brothers as the most lethal instruments of combat in the United States Army, bring the fight to the decisive point of the enemy, and return home.

CPT Wainwright's military education includes Airborne School (2000), the Infantry Officer Basic Course (Platoon Honor Graduate, 2004), and Ranger School (Tex Turner Officer Leadership Honor Graduate, 2005), and was recently awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge for engagements in Zabol Province, Afghanistan.

PLATOON SERGEANT: SSG (P) Sean Horval

Hometown: Cleveland, OH

Birthday: 16 September 1977

Age: 28

Biography: SSG Horval is currently assigned to Chosen Company, 2nd Battalion 503rd Infantry, 173rd ABN BDE based out of Vicenza, Italy and has been since 25 July 2005. He is assigned as Platoon Sergeant for 3rd Platoon. He is responsible for the health, morale, training, and accountability of 37 men in a Airborne Infantry Rifleman Platoon. .

SSG Horval was previously assigned to HHC 173rd BDE, were he served as the BDE S-3 Air NCO from November 2004 to July 2005. He also served in the 74th Long Range Surveillance Detachment as a Team Sergeant from October 2003 to November 2004, HHC 1-508th Scout Platoon as a Scout Squad Leader from March 2002 to September 2003, and Bravo Company 1-508th as a Fire Team Leader from December 2000 to February 2002.

Deployments he has participated in during his tour in Italy consist of: five rotations to Grafenwoher Germany, three rotations to Hoensfels, Germany, two deployments to Kosovo for Operation Rapid Guardian II and IV, one deployment to Lenin, Germany, one deployment to Hungry for Operation Madgar Response, one deployment to Germany for Operation Unified Endeavor, nine months in Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom I, and one year in Afghanistan for Operation Enduring Freedom VI.

Achievements he accomplished during his tour in Italy are: graduate of Special Forces Assessment and Selection (SFAS), Italian Jump School, NBC School, Jumpmaster School, Sniper School, Basic Non-Commissioned Officer Course (BNCOC), ILIRP Operational Planning Course, Unit Movement Officer Course, Combatives Phase 1 and 2, and he has been awarded the Combat Infantryman’s Badge.

SSG Horval was assigned to the 6/101st AVN Pathfinder Company at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky. He served as a Pathfinder and Assistant Team Leader from October 1997 to November 2000.

Deployments he participated in during his tour consisted of: two rotations to the Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC) and one deployment to Central America for Operation Hurricane Mitch.

Achievements he accomplished during his tour were: obtaining the Expert Infantryman’s Badge, graduate of the Sabalauski Air Assault School, Pathfinder School, Combat Life Saver Course (CLS), Ft. Campbell Pre-Ranger Course, Ranger School, and the Warrior Leaders Course (WLC) formerly known as PLDC.

His awards include the Army Commendation Medal (1 Oak Leaf Cluster), Army Achievement Medal (1 Oak Leaf Cluster), Army Good Conduct Medal (second award), the National Defense Ribbon, Global War On Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War On Terrorism Medal, the Humanitarian Service Ribbon, Noncommissioned Officers Professional Development Ribbon (numeral 2), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, and the NATO Service Medal.

SSG Horval is married and has one son, his name is Giovanni. His wife, Martina, is from Italy and is currently residing in Vicenza, Italy. He enjoys hunting, fishing, traveling, dining out and aquariums.

 




1ST SQUAD LEADER: SSG Matthew Blaskowski

Hometown: Levering, MI

Birthday: 05 March 1980

Age: 26

Biography: SSG Blaskowski was born and raised in Cheboygan, Michigan a small town in the Northern Lower Peninsula. He graduated from the Cheboygan area High School in 1998 and joined the army 2 weeks later. He completed Basic Training and AIT at Fort Benning Georgia, and was later assigned to 2nd BN 87th Infantry Regiment at Fort Drum, NY. While assigned, he served as a riflemen, M249 SAW Gunner, Scout, and Sniper Team Leader. In September of 1999, he deployed to Bosnia in support of the Stabilization Force 6 (SFOR6) for seven months. He participated in numerous deployments to Fort Polk, Louisiana, and Fort Irwin, California. In March of 2001, he reenlisted to go to Vicenza, Italy, to serve in the 173rd Airborne Brigade. After Completing Airborne School, he arrived in Vicenza in February 2002, and was immediately assigned to Battle Co. 2nd BN ABN 503rd INF as a team leader. He is now serving in Chosen Company as a Weapons Squad Leader in 3rd PLT.

SSG Blaskowski has attended Airborne School, Sniper School, 10th Mountain Division’s Mountain Leader Combat Certification Course, and the Army’s Primary Leadership Development Course. He also earned his Expert Infantryman Badge.

 



2ND SQUAD LEADER: SSG Clint Mack

Hometown: San Diego, CA

Birthday: 29 June 1980

Age: 24

Biography: SSG Clint Mack was born on June 29th, 1980 in San Diego, CA. Born into a military family, he moved around a lot, but settled down and graduated from High School in Suwannee, GA in 1998. After high school, while working as a cook and as a warehouse dock loader, he quickly chose the Army as his future career. SSG Mack attended basic and AIT Infantry training at Fort Benning, GA. Upon graduation, he immediately attended Airborne school and was assigned to C co, 1/ 325th Infantry Regiment in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. There he served as a rifleman, M-240B gunner, SAW gunner and team leader.

SSG Mack was assigned to 1/325 for four years, during which he participated in Operation Joint Guardian, on the Kosovo Macedonian border in 2000. He also participated in a German Rue in the mountains of northern Germany. In 2002, SSG Mack reenlisted for an assignment to the 173rd ABN BDE. Two months after arriving, he jumped into northern Iraq with 2nd platoon, Chosen Co, 2/503rd. Since redeployment, he has been assigned to 3rd platoon Chosen co. SSG Mack’s accomplishments include Airborne school (1999), Combat Lifesaver Course (1999), Javelin gunner’s course (1999), Machine gun leader’s course 2000, Primary Leadership development course 2001, and Jumpmaster School (2004). His awards include the Combat Infantry Badge, Expert Infantry Badge, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, German Shutzansner (bronze), Kosovo campaign Medal, and the NATO Service Medal.

SSG Mack has been married to his gorgeous wife Summer, of North Carolina, for three great years, and they have one daughter, Emma Claire (1), who was born during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He credits his family and his faith in God as his backbone. SSG Mack is a career paratrooper who is young and motivated. He consistently strives to know and care more for his soldiers on a personal and professional level everyday. SSG Mack states “I have had so many great NCOs train and mentor me to achieve success at such a young age, that I makes it a personal goal to pass on all my knowledge and do the same for my soldiers.” SSG Mack also states that having been deployed to a combat area as a young Private, he understands what his soldiers are experiencing. Also, as a father, he can only imagine the worries of entrusting the lives of your sons to a stranger, and reassures you that your sons will be the most lethal instrument of ground combat that America can produce. They will be trained and ready!








3RD SQUAD LEADER: SSG Albert Galvan

Hometown: Deltona, FL

Birthday: 21 March 1980

Age: 25

Biography: SSG Galvan was born on 21 March 1980, in Lorain Ohio. He graduated Lorain Admiral King High School and immediately left for Basic Training eight days after graduation on 18 June 1998. Upon graduation from O.S.U.T. (One Station Unit Training), SSG Galvan immediately started Airborne School where upon graduation was sent to the 2d Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg NC. He served as ammo bearer, assistant gunner, gunner, Javelin anti-armor gunner, automatic rifleman, grenadier, and team leader in 3rd Platoon, Alpha Company. While assigned to “2 Panther”, SSG Galvan participated in Operations Joint Guardian, Noble Eagle, and was part of the first American ground forces to enter Albania and Kosovo during the 1999 Air strikes in the Balkans. Upon return from the Balkans SSG Galvan participated in the Multinational Force and Observers deployment to Sinai, Egypt. After four years in the 82nd, SSG Galvan was assigned to the 173d Airborne Brigade in Vicenza, Italy and parachuted into Iraq with Chosen Company 2-503.

SSG Galvan has completed Airborne School, Javelin School, Combat Lifesaver Course, Primary Leadership Development Course, and the Hazardous Material Handling Course.


 



WPNS SQUAD LEADER: SSG Christopher Sanchez

Hometown: Portsmouth, VA

Birthday: 21 December 1973

Age: 31

Biography: SSG Chris Sanchez was born December 21, 1973 in Portsmouth, VA. He graduated from Penfield Senior High in 1992, and began bartending while working his way through college. After 6 years, he joined the Army on 23 January 1998, in order to serve his country as well as open more possibilities for himself. Upon completion of OSUT at Ft. Benning GA, he was assigned to Delta Company 1-36 IN at Friedberg, Germany. While assigned there, he served as a squad automatic rifleman and platoon RTO. In February 2000, he was selected to serve as a sniper in the scout platoon in HHC 1-36 IN. From May 2000 to January 2001, he deployed to Kosovo as part of Task Force Falcon 2A. Upon return, he served as a team leader in Alpha Company 1-36 IN.

In November 2001, he was reassigned to Vicenza, Italy, as an ATL in the scout platoon 2-503 D. On 26 March 2003, he participated in the Airborne Assault onto Bashur Airfield in Northern Iraq, as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In July 2003, he was reassigned as a squad leader in Third Platoon (Motorized), Chosen Company 2-503 D, and continues to serve in this position.

SSG Chris Sanchez has successfully completed the following military schools: Basic Airborne Course (2001), U.S. Army Sniper School (2002), Primary Leadership Development Course PLDC (2001), Basic Non Commissioned Officer Course BNCOC (2004), and Emergency Medical Technician-Basic Course EMT-B (2002).
